I haven’t watched The Brutalist. Honestly, I think this movie (along with many others) with strong Jewish victim sentiment being made - and actually this one being very overtly pro-Israel - and particularly pushed in this particular time and political climate feels decidedly… intentional. And Adrian’s chosen language and dialogue during his press moments are also, well, decidedly intentional. It makes me uncomfortable. And if nothing else, it makes me feel like I don’t necessarily have to go out of my way to like him. And you don’t have to go out of your way to change your mind about him.
(Sorry this is a messy comment I’m kind of half asleep)
I love this! And I agree, leave art to artists and actors to acting. No one powerful in another arena should be easily let into another.
Also Adrien Brody cheated constantly on his ex, bought her a castle to try and say sorry I guess? Then they split and she married her next fella and they seem good together and she's happy now.
So I'm gonna say there might also be an element of being a good judge of character to your feelings about him... Or maybe I'm just being gossipy...
Viva being a hater! Some stuff is shit, and that’s fine. Better than that, shit stuff gives you that luxurious feeling of having an authentic and strong opinion.
I’ve been thinking about this on and of since you first posted it because I knew mr brody was on by blacklist and i couldnt remember why. today i was lurking online and fell into a cycle of tiktoks of artists who work with Roman Polanski knowing what we know about him and I remembered that Polanski is the director of the Pianist and that’s why I don’t like Brody. I found a video of someone asking him about his choice to work with Polanski and he was very blaze about Polanski’s past (and also present since he still cant enter the US without facing jail time) and he was saying he doesn’t want to enquire too much about a director’s past and wants to focus on the work they do etc so I’m even more refusing to associate with his work. I remember we watched the Pianist when I was in school as part of history and I think that was an interesting choice on behalf of my teacher considering Polanski’s crimes…
I needed this thoughtful giggle. Thank you for providing free longer reads for the broke.
I can’t explain how much I feel the same about his art. Your reflections at where it comes from are 🎯. This piece on it made me want to chew glass: https://www.newsweek.com/adrien-brody-ostentatious-glory-art-basel-miami-beach-2015-402622
Honestly. Gina - have you seen his Oscar acceptance speech?
watched it live.
It’s hard not to feel vindicated.
the evidence is so loud

Seeing the uncomfortable parts of you in another is a helluva thing. Loved this!
Brodyism movement aside, The Darjeeling Limited is one of my favourite films ever

Have you seen his Jamaican skit on SNL? That was only 42 seconds but felt longer than his Oscar speech https://www.tiktok.com/@huggyattack/video/7463238595827141934
The art is dire to be fair! Also, I think people with ADHD are remarkably good at spotting dog shit people (I have ADHD, so I speak from experience)!
Didn’t know he was an artist.
It’s not obvious from the few films of his I’ve seen…
PS I wouldn’t bother with The Brutalist if you don’t like his schtick, you know, just him playing himself?
